Today was pretty much spent struggling with frustrations such as Internet problems, parking challenges and negotiations with Sheffield Archives centre. After calling into a shopping complex to sort out the ipad mail issue (turned our being the carrier not the ipad) we went on to find the archives as I wanted to look at the parish records to see if I could get back any further than 1780. After completing the bureaucratic hurdle to access the records it was disappointing to not find very much. I did find one ancestor I didn't know about but that was all. I had 2 men on either side and they just kept wanting to talk to me about their family history research, despite my monosyllabic answers.
On the way out of Sheffield Geoff had a look at the Abbeydale industrial hamlet which had lots of amazing original machines including waterwheels, tilt hammers, grinding hull and the only intact crucible steel furnace surviving in the world.
A fairly long drive then to Ramsey to spend the night at Patrick and Margaret's. It was just lovely to catch up with them again. Patrick shouted us dinner at their 'local'. It was rather upmarket and very nice. Al, Patrick and Margaret's neighbour came as well and it was a fun evening.
