The weather today was typical Welsh weather I think. In the one day we had sunshine, wind, showers, hail and snow. Eddie said there had been snow on the hills this morning. It was bitterly cold and then fairly warm. But we soldiered on and still saw lots.
Before we left we took some photos of Cousin Anthony's beautiful house we are staying in.
First stop was Ironbridge which has been described by some as the birthplace of the industrial revolution. This description is based on the idea that Abraham Darby perfected the technique of smelting iron with coke, in Coalbrookdale, allowing much cheaper production of iron. His grandson, Abraham 111, built the famous Ironbridge, the first cast iron bridge ever. It is now a world heritage site. We looked through the museum which gave an overview of the history. Apparently they were blessed with having coal, clay, limestone and iron ore in the one area and they certainly used these resources well.
Geoff was very excited to see the bridge as he had wanted to do this for many years.
I wonder if they were any relation to our Darby ancestors?
After Ironbridge it was off to Shrewsbury which was a beautiful medieval town.
A 16th century house which now houses the museum.
Antony's Dad had found one of these Iron Age canoes when he was young and given it to this museum.
Medieval market place
Traitors Gate where the Parliamentarian forces were let into the city in the civil war.
The castle
Rain and hail finished off the day!
